Research Associate in Dementia and Epidemiology
An epidemiologist with expertise in dementia research is required to work on a project funded by the US National Institute on Aging (NIA) assessing dementia and cognitive impairment in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) using protocols harmonised with the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS). The post holder will have an important role in helping to develop this study, providing academic oversight of data collection, liaising with colleagues in the USA, and carrying out analyses of new and existing data within ELSA on dementia and cognitive impairment.
The post provides an excellent opportunity to develop a substantive programme of research of scientific and policy importance.
The post will be based in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and is funded until 31 May 2020 in the first instance.
Applicants should have completed PhD training in ageing, dementia, or relevant area, or have equivalent research experience, have an outstanding academic record, first rate writing ability and strong computer skills.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £29,485 – £31,091 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
The post requires a sound understanding of research methodology, and experience of cross-national analyses would be desirable. Good interpersonal skills are needed, as is an ability to negotiate and co-ordinate with other organisations involved in the study. The ability to work effectively in a team and to deadlines, accuracy and an eye for detail, as well as self-motivation and initiative are all essential qualities required of applicants.
