United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Director of International Development - Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns
We are seeking an inspirational and innovative leader to join us as Director of International Development – Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns to provide strategic leadership to our new International Development team within the Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Division. The new team will drive our flagship Every Last Child campaign, to deliver change globally and in the UK for children left behind by both poverty and discrimination.

We’ve integrated lobbying, policy, research and campaigning into one agile, powerful engine for change. The International Development team’s work will span health, education, nutrition, sustainability and inclusion and lead Save the Children’s global work on the Sustainable Development Goals. Reporting to the Executive Director of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns, you will play a leadership role across Save the Children, delivering cross-division or cross-organisational strategic initiatives that create a platform for SCUK to operate at the forefront of positive change in the sector. You will also:
• Create the framework and capability to drive an integrated advocacy and campaigns model for International Development globally and in the UK
• Align the work of the department with the strategy of the wider organisation
• Build, engage and manage the new International Development team, providing leadership to a team of senior technical experts
• Drive the development of campaigns in Save the Children country programmes, leading global processes involving Save the Children International and other national Save the Children members
• Be an authoritative external representative with the media, government, parliamentarians and other decision-makers
• Identify, build and lead innovative policy, advocacy and campaigns partnerships, managing strategic relationships to achieve greater impact for our work
To be successful you will be a proven leader with the ability to inspire others. You will have solid experience of influencing international processes and / or of delivering national-level change outside of the UK, ideally gained in an INGO, international institution, national government or NGO in a developing country. An innovative, collaborative networker, you will also have:
• Experience of lobbying at ministerial level and briefing print and broadcast media at national level
• Extensive experience in international development covering one or more of thematic areas (health, nutrition or education), development financing, economic justice and inclusion and equality
• Demonstrable experience in building and leading teams, with clear ability to create a strong sense of shared values and engender a high performing culture
• The proven ability to operate strategically, with a track record of winning significant international policy change
• Demonstrable experience of working at a senior level in complex global operating environments with a wide external network covering governments, international institutions, think tanks, research bodies and key opinion formers.
The ability and willingness to travel frequently, including to insecure locations is essential.
