Senior Credit Analyst - Oil & Gas SME


The Corporate Credit Risk team within the Wholesale Credit Risk Department is primarily involved with the analysis and credit rating of multinational and UK corporate clients within the perimeter of Santander Global Banking and Markets (SGBM) in the UK.


The Corporate Credit Risk team is the local representative of HO Credit Risk, and is instrumental in transmitting and implementing the local and the group best practices, credit policies, procedures and risk appetite in SGBM UK.


The Credit Analyst (CA) requires self-management of workflows as well as strong interaction and good communication with the front office, senior management and HO. The CA needs to ensure that transactions and limits are established with a high level of quality during the analysis process and that approval deadlines, which are often very tight, are met as far as possible.


As a Senior Credit Analyst – Oil & Gas SME, your main responsibilities will be:


  • Undertake internal rating assessments, using the Santander Group proprietary internal rating tools and Oil and Gas Specific Companies

  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of new lending proposals, annual reviews and waiver requests, ensuring that all risks are identified and make a judgement as to their acceptability in a timely fashion followed by a suitable recommendation to the appropriate approval authority.

  • Provide independent and robust recommendations to the Senior Management/Committees about potential transactions. When applicable, attend to the relevant committees both in the UK and Madrid.

  • Ensure coordination with HO and FO Madrid Credit Risk Department.

  • Control global positions and make sure excesses are investigated and appropriate action is taken within the required timescales.

What we’ll be looking for in you


  • Degree Level educated or equivalent

  • Strong experience of credit analysis of and understanding of oil and gas companies, independent E&P companies, Structured Trade Finance and Trade Finance Products

  • A demonstrable track record in large corporates risk analysis, including balance sheet, P&L and cash flow trends,

  • Strong skills in communication, both orally and written form, in a confident, articulate, structured and coherent manner.

  • Clear and articulate communication of credit decisions with an ability to justify such if challenged (whether by Front Office or Senior Management) with sound reasoning;
