Political Adviser to the Conservative Group - London Borough of Tower Hamlets - Tower Hamlets

Role Purpose

1 x part time post on 17.5 hours per week on a fixed term contract until 18th May 2018 (reviewed annually)

To support Tower Hamlets Conservative Group, through media work, research, and in liaising with different parts of the council, local MPs and other organisations on its behalf. You will provide research, information, scrutiny and support services, as required, by the Conservative group on the Council. To service directly, in a personal and professional manner, all meetings of the group and its subordinate bodies, giving advice on policy and procedural matters and to undertake follow-up work, as required. You will support Conservative Group members in carrying out their policy development and initiatives and assist group officers in the execution of their duties, be responsible for monitoring and implementing group decisions, to keep abreast of new legislation and political developments both nationally, regionally and locally and advise and support the group in initiating and developing political strategy and policies. You will also act as a point of liaison between the political administration and council officers (including the Chief Executive, Corporate Directors and Service Heads) in order to facilitate the conduct of the Council’;s business. You must also develop and maintain an effective information management system using ICT and other available resources. In consultation with the Leader of the Group, you will liaise with the media to represent the views of the Group including the issue of press releases etc. on behalf of the Group or Leader.

Requirements


Conservative Party membership is essential and proof of membership to be provided. You must have good understanding of the functions of local government, the new governance arrangements and the roles of Opposition members and of officers. A knowledge of key issues facing local government and the national party policy, awareness of the issues involved when working within a multi-racial community and knowledge of a local authority’;s internal management arrangements including budgetary processes is essential. Commitment and motivation to work such hours as maybe necessary to achieve the purpose of the post will involve attendance at evening meetings.
