What does a Highways Maintenance Operative do?
Highways Maintenance Operatives (also known as road workers) ensure that roads, pavements,
motorway networks and other surfaces are well maintained. This includes building brand new roads and
widening, repairing and resurfacing existing networks.
Highways Maintenance Operatives operate, maintain and transport construction equipment as well as
removing unsafe obstacles such as rocks and debris. They may also lay drainage, curbs and pavements
and install safety fencing and guard rails. You may also be involved with warning and directing traffic
during repair operations, as well as operating, maintaining and transporting construction equipment and
supplies. There is also a need for operatives to maintain roads in the winter which can include winter
gritting.
