Cataloguer, Tibetan Collections - British Library - St Pancras
Time Fixed Term Contract for 6 Months
The
post holder will catalogue Tibetan language material, primarily modern printed
material from a backlog of recently acquired items. This will involve creating
or deriving catalogue records in accordance with the cataloguing standards used
by the British Library to deadline. The
post holder will also be required to sort through historical backlogs to
identify duplicate items and to de-accession material and keep accurate
statistical records of work carried out. The post holder will be situated in
the South Asia team in the Asian and African Collections Department of the
Library, and will be expected to work together with curators and other staff to
contribute as needed to the wider functioning of the department.
Essential
requirements include degree-level knowledge of classical Tibetan, the ability
to transliterate classical Tibetan into Latin script according to Library of
Congress Romanisation standards, knowledge of the historical and cultural
context of Tibet (experience in South Asian or Central Asian studies,) accuracy
and attention to detail, ability to focus on repetitive and detailed tasks and
work independently as well as with a team, ability to use IT and willingness to
learn new technologies with particular reference to cataloguing, and good
analytical and decision-making abilities.
Desirable
requirements include previous experience cataloguing books using MARC21 format
and RDA cataloguing guidelines, previous experience applying Library of
Congress subject headings and authority controls, previous experience working
in a library, museum, or academic environment, and knowledge of the current
landscape of Tibetan publishing. Knowledge of other South Asian languages,
while not an essential requirement, would certainly be a desirable requirement.
