Title: Dietary intake and eating behaviours in community-dwelling ethnically diverse older adults: cultural tailoring of assessment and identification of key social influences.

Life expectancy is increasing but the period of life spent in good health is not keeping pace, meaning it is vital understand the factors influencing health in old age. 


This project will develop and evaluate adapted assessments of dietary intake and eating behaviours in community-dwelling ethnically diverse older adults; and identify key social dynamics that promote or inhibit their ability to change eating and physical activity behaviours.  The project will recruit 140 ethnically diverse older adults aged ≥60yrs to develop and test a multiple-pass quantitative 24-hr dietary recall mixed-methods interview gather behavioural/contextual information related to food behaviours in addition to standard nutrient intake and food group data, and to identify key personal and social influences that impact food-related decisions. It will also recruit 100 hospital- and community-based ethnically diverse older adults to identify if, and how, social capital and the typology, size, composition and density of social networks influence eating and physical activity behaviours among ethnically diverse older adults.


Candidates should have a strong Bachelors (2i or equivalent GPA score) or Masters Degree in the life sciences e.g., Nutrition, Health Psychology, Biomedical Sciences, Sport and Exercise Sciences, Physiology, and an interest in developing skills within a multi-disciplinary approach to healthy ageing research. Previous experience with ethnically diverse adults is desirable.

ODI (www.odi.org.uk) aims to inspire and inform policy and practice to reduce poverty by locking together high-quality applied research and practical policy advice.


We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to strengthen our work on climate change adaptation, disaster risk and resilience. This position will join a particularly active group, which has been successful in attracting numerous multi-year projects and has enjoyed increasing influence in international and national policy agendas.


As a Research Fellow in the Adaptation and Resilience team, the post-holder will be responsible for developing, fundraising for, conducting and managing high-quality and innovative research, policy advice and public affairs programmes, broadly within the Institute’s overall strategy and with the aim of inspiring and informing policy.


Our Adaptation and Resilience Team consists of a core team of 14 who investigate the concepts of resilience, disaster risk reduction and adaptation. Core conceptual research interests within the team include: the science-knowledge-policy nexus; governance and politics; transitions and transformations; and understanding and operationalising resilience. As well as this core team, many other ODI programmes also engage with the team in collaborative work on adaptation and resilience.


Our ways of working include:



  • Carrying out primary research and synthesis of a range of thematic areas.




  • Providing policy advice and outreach to improve the uptake of risk management and resilience-building approaches across donors and national and sub-national government departments, focusing on water, agriculture and economic growth/finance sectors and ministries.




  • Partnering, mentoring and acting as intermediaries between climate scientists, social scientists and decision-makers, including evaluating the new geography of risk and poverty.




  • Playing a critical role in promoting disaster risk management in post-2015 development and climate agreements, including shaping the outcomes of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.




  • Providing knowledge management, for instance through our role as Knowledge Manager for the Building Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Extremes and Disasters (BRACED) project; and Pathways to resilience in semi-arid economies (PRISE).



Our emerging research and policy themes on resilience, disaster risk and adaptation include:


  • Frameworks and measurement

  • Governance and institutional change

  • Resilience in difficult environments, including fragile and conflict affected states

  • Climate risk information and information and Communications Technology (ICTs)

  • Gender equality and inclusion

  • Urban resilience

  • Semi-arid economies and ecosystems

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a full time epidemiologist/public health/mental health researcher to join the Centre for Global Mental Health as a Senior Lecturer for 3 years to work on global mental health projects at the LSHTM. This post is a fantastic opportunity for a talented researcher with relevant epidemiological or research skills and a commitment to global mental health research, which will allow the successful candidate to work with some of the world’s leaders in this field.


The job provides a range of opportunities in research, teaching and management of the Centre. The post-holder will conduct innovative, methodologically sound research on the epidemiology of mental disorders, mental health services and/or the development of mental health interventions in low- and middle income-countries. This work should extend our internationally competitive programme of global mental health research and thus contribute to studies of the aetiology, prevention and treatment of range of mental disorders..


The successful candidate will be expected build his/her own portfolio of research projects as well as having an opportunity to join other research projects undertaken by the centre, will have an opportunity to supervise PhD and MSc students and teach in our world leading MSc in Global Mental Health and will also support other areas of the work of the Centre for Global Mental Health (www.centreforglobalmentalhealth.org) as necessary, including help with the management of the Centre.


Applicants will need a PhD in a related discipline (for example epidemiology, public health or mental health), experience in writing grants and conducting research (preferably in a low resource setting), a strong publication record, and have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Familiarity with advanced statistical analysis using Stata would be an advantage but not essential.


The appointment is available for 3 years initially. The appointment will be based in London, in the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health and the Department of Population Health. The appointment will be made on the LSHTM’s academic pathway Grade 8, in the range of £52,895 to £60,712 per annum inclusive. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Universities Superannuation Pension Scheme (USS) is available.
