United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Research and Policy Intern, Learning Team


Girls Not Brides has an exciting new opening for a research and policy intern to join the Girls Not Brides Learning Team. The Learning Team identifies and highlights policy responses needed to address child marriage and works with Girls Not Brides members to build an understanding of what it will take to address child marriage. We also seek to strengthen programmatic approaches to addressing child marriage by facilitating learning between members about different approaches to addressing the practice.


This is an excellent opportunity for a talented individual looking to gain experience with a non-governmental organisation and be part of the growth of an exciting new initiative. The internship would suit individuals with a strong interest in development, public policy, or human rights with excellent research, analysis and written communication skills.


Accountability: Head of Learning


Main responsibilities and tasks will include:


(1) Conducting research and policy analysis on developments related to child marriage


  • Conduct desk research and synthesis of thematic issues and prepare briefing documents, issue briefs and other materials to support the partnership’s work

  • Prepare briefings and presentations for the secretariat on specific issues in advance of upcoming events, meetings and interviews

(2) Highlighting solutions to address child marriage


  • Support documentation of information about Girls Not Brides members’ approaches to ending child marriage

  • Maintain and update Girls Not Brides members’ records in Salesforce

(3) Monitoring reports and publications related to child marriage


  • Review and synthesize findings from the latest research and evidence related to child marriage for inclusion on the reports and publications page of the website

(4) Support the Learning Team’s work in facilitating learning about programmatic approaches to address child marriage


  • Assist in organising webinars, events and field visits as required

  • Respond to enquiries from members and partners about latest research and resources related to child marriage

(5) Contributing to the broader strategic, programmatic and communications work of Girls Not Brides.


We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications and skills:


  • Graduate qualification in a relevant area (such as public policy, development studies, international relations, human rights or gender issues) or proven experience in a related field

  • Relevant professional experience, preferably engaging with non-governmental or civil society organizations, particularly in low- or middle-income countries

  • Strong policy analysis skills and understanding of policy dynamics on gender and/or development issues

  • Excellent research skills and ability to interpret and synthesise data and evidence from different sources

  • Excellent written communication skills and ability to write for different audiences

  • An excellent eye for accuracy and attention to detail

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures

  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality

  • Excellent written and spoken English; proficiency in another relevant language, such as French, is highly desirable; and,

  • Proficiency in the latest versions of MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, and databases.

Eligibility criteria


The internship will be offered for a period of up to six months on a minimum four days a week basis. Internship allowance will be based on the national living wage for London and paid on a monthly basis. Non-EU candidates must have a visa that allows placement in the UK.
