The research study:

This study aims to examine, through two pilot studies, the effects of Meaning-Centred Therapy on the quality of life and psychological stress in cancer patients receiving palliative care (trial 1) and curative medical care (trial 2). Cancer is one of the most common life-threatening diseases in the UK and, despite medical-technological improvements, tens of thousands die yearly in the UK. Although only 25% of the patients report pathological levels of anxiety and depression, a majority report stress about the question: ‘How can I live a meaningful and satisfying life despite the limitations of my disease?’ As traditional psycho-oncological therapies focus on reducing psychopathology and stress and do not address meaning-related questions, traditional therapies only show small effects, leaving a significant gap in the treatment of patient needs (Vos, 2016). This group intervention helps patients in exploring how to live a meaningful life again. Its effects will be tested via questionnaires and interviews in multiple clinical settings.
