Controller, Drama Commissioning, BBC Television - BBC - London
Working with independent producers, BBC Studios and international co-producers, the Controller, Drama Commissioning will build on the BBC’s reputation for creative range and high audience appreciation. This role is critical to ensuring the BBC remains at the forefront of British Drama, delivering exceptional work based on a deep understanding of the audience.
Role Responsibility
The Controller, Drama Commissioning will report to the Acting Director of Television, taking responsibility for the delivery of the Drama genre across the BBC’s portfolio of TV channels and online. Working closely with the Channel Controllers and Editors you will find and help develop new drama, setting an editorial strategy that effectively reflects the diversity of the BBC’s audiences.
By directing the development process you will determine BBC Drama’s priorities and support a culture that encourages a risk-taking approach to ideas and talent development. You will be tasked with finding and securing projects which encourage creative innovation and set a benchmark for the quality and ambition the BBC aims to deliver.
Commissioning decisions will be based on a sound understanding of quality, originality, cost, delivery date, rights exploitation and funding needs. You will be accountable for the effective management of the Drama genre finances and ensure quality is maintained across a wide range of projects, whilst also delivering value for money for the licence-fee payer.

The successful candidate will have outstanding creative and editorial judgement, be able to demonstrate an understanding of editorial standards and compliance requirements, particularly as they relate to the BBC Values. A strong communicator, with the ability to engage and inspire both internally and externally, the role requires a leader who has successfully developed creative partnerships and influenced key business stakeholders.
