Graduate Teaching Assistants


Purpose and Main Duties:


Applications are invited for two part-time positions as graduate teaching assistants in the Department of Psychological Sciences, Birkbeck, University of London (http://www.bbk.ac.uk/psychology/). These positions are only available for individuals seeking to pursue studies leading to a PhD in the Department of Psychological Sciences, and cover tuition fees as well as providing 0.5 FTE salary.


Candidate Requirements:


The applicant will be expected both to pursue studies leading towards a PhD and to provide part-time teaching assistance (17.5 hours per week during term time). The duties of the teaching will include delivery and preparation of teaching materials for students as well as demonstrating in practical classes and acting as seminar leaders. An interest in distance learning technology will be an advantage. Candidates are invited to submit their own research project description or contact academic staff to develop research proposals. Possible areas of research include: brain and cognitive development, cognitive neuroscience, computational modelling, and child, family and health psychology.

The Department of Psychological Sciences (http://www.bbk.ac.uk/psychology/). is one of the leading departments in the UK. It was recently ranked 5th in the UK in REF 2014. In the Best Global Universities Ranking 2016, the department was ranked 5th in the world according to an index of the total number of citations per research paper (the overall impact of a university’s research independent of the institution’s size or age).


Further Information:


Salary: £15,846 per annum inclusive of London Allowance (this is 0.5 FTE pro-rata to the full-time equivalent of £31,693 per annum) on Grade 6 of the College’s London salary scale, and includes a fee waiver: one at the home/EU rate; and one at the overseas rate for the MPhil/PhD programme at Birkbeck.


This job is part time and fixed term for a period of 4 years, working on average 17.5 hours a week (0.5 FTE). The salary quoted above is inclusive of London allowance. The appointment may be subject to a probationary period of up to six months.
