Professor in Global Burns Injury Policy & Research

For Swansea University to achieve and deliver its top-20 ambition the College of Human and Health Sciences is seeking to appoint a Chair in Global Burns Injury Policy and Research, with excellence in Innovation and Engagement. The Chair will undertake teaching, research and innovation and engagement activities that span many disciplines of the College, including nursing, social policy, health psychology, child health, paramedic science, and ageing. The Chair will enhance the internationalisation strategy of the College through teaching, research, government level policy and translational activities across a large number of low and middle income countries (LMICs), as these are known to have very limited burn care services. A major purpose of the post is to provide a locally prominent and internationally highly visible flagship example of the College’s translational aspirations, in a globally underserved area of heath treatment, research and policy.


The Chair would be required to create, lead, manage and develop a Centre for Global Burn Injury Policy & Research at Swansea University, and to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of prominence and excellence in all of its activities. The Chair will be accountable to the Head of College and will be supported by senior colleagues, team members and colleagues from Professional Services. The Chair will be required to exercise leadership, demonstrate vision and empower colleagues to contribute to the Centre and College strategic aims, meet relevant KPIs and targets within the Business plan. The HoC will work collaboratively with key stakeholders including funding bodies, local, international and government agencies, local health boards, etc., to ensure that the Centre delivers excellence in all areas of activity, and is seen internationally to be so doing.


This is a permanent, part time opportunity for a Professor in Innovation & Engagement, the position is based on 15 hours employment per week, located at the College’s Singleton Park Campus, although there is the expectation that duties need to be undertaken at other sites used by the College, including the Bay Campus, as and when required.


The main duties include:


  • leadership on the development of regional and global strategies to reduce the incidence and impact of burns injuries

  • Act as a pipeline of excellent, quality research, teaching and strategy development which will deliver real change in the management of burns patients globally.

  • Promote interdisciplinarity and translational research and teaching within global burns injury

  • Promote dialogue between researchers, clinicians, government, policy makers and the citizen in Burns

  • Strengthen the profile of Swansea University as a national and international centre for Global Burns research and policy.

  • Link to and to contribute to the national and international strategy being developed by Global governments in relation to Burns

  • Applicants should have a degree in medicine with Membership of the relevant Medical Royal College or Colleges and a current relevant clinical position within the NHS with a sustained record of publication of international reach or at equivalent impact significance appropriate to the field of burns injury, research and policy with translational achievement in the field of burns injury, research and policy, in the UK and overseas
