Overall summary of the business

News International, Mirror Group Newspapers, Associated Newspapers etc are big, successful media owners in the UK, a lot of their revenue comes from the advertising in these newspapers and their accompanying websites, major brands such as Sainsbury’s, Virgin, Homebase, British Airways are just a few of the clients that have huge budgets to advertise in national press and their accompanying websites. You will be part of the business development team, that present to the Marketing Manager of the brands (British Airways, Sainsbury’s etc) to secure a percentage of their advertising budget.

Your duties

If successful, employed by a newspaper group, you will be put on a 2 week training course to learn everything about the newspaper, it’s audience and readership, what their spending habits are, how much disposable income they have and how they like to spend it, which brands are the most applicable for the demographic of your newspaper, you will learn how to put Powerpoint presentations together, how to look after your existing client base (crucial) upsell to them, come out with new ideas, i.e when approaching Bank Holidays a brand like Sainsbury’s will want to increase their advertising spend across for example The Daily Mail newspaper and dailymail.co.uk to advertise their BBQ’s and DIY range, when approaching Mother’s Day, Interflora will increase their advertising spend across The Mirror, The Sunday Mirror, www.mirror.com and more than likely their regional titles such as The Liverpool Echo and Manchester Evening News. The major holiday companies will invest heavily in advertising coming up to the holiday periods. Also, there are regular advertisers all year around, if you consider the faster growing demographic in the UK is the over 90’s and over 100’s imagine how much the mobility companies (Stannah chair lifts etc) spend.

You have to constantly thinking up new ideas, be creative, you will want to secure as much of the clients advertising budget as possible.

Although creativity is a big part of this role, it is NOT journalism neither is it desk top publishing, it’s business development, you will be one of the team bringing deals and revenue into the newspaper group.

You will start off as a Account Executive, next promotion is Account Manager then Group Head followed by Director. It’s a very meritocratic environment, all the current management team started off in the role you are applying for.
