Postgraduate Research Assistant

We seek to appoint a highly motivated Graduate Research Assistant to work on a British Academy funded project, ‘Novel word learning during reading in children who speak English as an Additional Language’ at the Institute of Education, University of Reading.


You will be primarily responsible for collecting data from primary school children aged between 8 and 12 years of age who speak English as an additional language (EAL). This will involve assessing their language and literacy skills using standardised tests and running eye tracking experiments to examine novel word learning during reading.


The post will require strong communication and organisational skills for working with pupils and school staff to collect data and develop working relationships. It is essential that the successful applicant has experience of working with children, ideally in a school setting, and experience of collecting data from children is highly desirable for this post. Research experience in the field of cognitive psychology, especially using eye tracking, and knowledge of experimental design and data analysis are also desirable although not essential and full training will be provided.


You will have:


–  A good (1st or 2:1) undergraduate degree in Psychology or a related field


–  Experience working with children, preferably in schools


–  A high level of numeracy and computer literacy (e.g., word processing, Excel, statistical and database packages)


–  Knowledge of psychology and experimental design
