Fully funded PhD studentship in Sport Psychology / Sociology: Understanding the Elite Female Athlete

Applications are invited for a fully-funded, four-year PhD studentship registered at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London, to begin on the 1st October 2016. This PhD is in conjunction with the English Institute of Sport (EIS), and the successful student will be mainly based at their HQ in Sheffield, alongside several members of the EIS Sport Psychology team.

Aim: The purpose of this PhD is to better understand the elite female athlete. More specifically, this PhD aims to enrich our understanding of what is means to be an elite female athlete, and explore the dynamic psychosocial challenges they experience in their preparations for the Olympic Games. To provide a contextualised understanding of the influence of the social-cultural realm of elite female athletes’ psychological experiences, this PhD will operate at the intersection between the psychology and sociology of sport. Qualitative inquiry will be used throughout this PhD. The main outcome from this PhD will be to disseminate knowledge to practitioners to enhance their working alliance with elite female athletes.

Essential criteria: Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS); a distinction (or working towards a distinction) in a BPS accredited MSc Sport Psychology programme or related discipline; evidence of excellent communication and time-management skills; and an in-depth understanding of and experience with qualitative methods.

Desirable criteria: Registered for Stage 2 Training to become a Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist with the British Psychological Society, and evidence of an ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
