Fixed Term Contract for 24 months


We are looking for a motivated and experienced Global Awards Adviser to provide internal advice, support and capacity building to our Global Academy Office (GAO) team and our network of Academy Centres. Through effective, internal award portfolio monitoring, you will ensure high standards of award management and compliance with donor requirements.


The mission of the Humanitarian Leadership Academy is to empower people around the world to prepare for and respond to crises in their own countries. The Academy works with the humanitarian sector and new partners from the technology industry, private sector and universities to help communities become more resilient in the face of disaster and give them the training and skills to respond to crises in their own countries.


As Global Awards Adviser you will act as the Academy ‘upstream’ focal point for each award sub-granted to the Academy as well as internally manage the contractual and donor compliance aspects of funding transferred ‘downstream’ to Academy Centres and Branches. In addition you will:


  • Liaise with the SCUK awards contact for the Academy portfolio to ensure that there is a mutually positive and constructive engagement between the Academy and Save the Children’s colleagues

  • Work closely with the Academy’s Finance Manager to regularly, consistently and strategically allocate GAO/ Centre / Branch expenditure against the Academy’s award portfolio, in line with Academy Finance and Award Policies, and donor requirements

  • Ensure that at all stages of the award cycle that the control framework of the funding is consistent with the situation, and that necessary risks are taken knowingly with appropriate mitigating actions

  • Advise the Senior Leadership Team and Academy Centre Directors on improving and maintaining adequate award controls and procedures in the GAO and Academy Centers

  • Act as lead in developing GAO Award Management system /data base, with support from GAO Operations & Finance, and SCUK Information Systems.

To be successful you will have a strong understanding of the award, management cycle, proposal submission best practices, and budget and report preparation. You should also have experience with Awards Management information systems. In addition you will have:


  • Proven experience and knowledge of award management regulations and proposal & reporting requirements across a variety of major donors, including institutional donors, trusts, foundations, and corporate

  • Experience of assisting with the preparation of management accounts and/or budgeting processes

  • Strong financial, analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills, including the ability to challenge and negotiate assertively and cooperatively with members of the Senior Leadership Team

  • Experience of establishing strong working relationships with colleagues from different functions and cultures.
