Graduate Research Assistant


An opportunity has arisen for a full time post as a Graduate Research Assistant within a well established and successful research team. The Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry, (Centre for Psychiatry, Queen Mary University of London) conducts extensive research on social aspects in psychiatry, including the role of helping relationships and the development and evaluation of novel interventions. In 2012, the Unit has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre, the only one in the world specifically for Mental Health Services Development. The Unit is headed by Professor Stefan Priebe and located at the Newham Centre for Mental Health.


The post-holder will work on the National Institute for Health Research funded research programme: “Volunteering in Mental Health Care for People with Psychosis (VOLUME)”. The programme, which began in September 2013, aims to improve mental health care for patients with psychosis through facilitating and strengthening the input of volunteers and in particular befriending schemes, schemes that provide one-to-one volunteer input. The programme aims to provide information on existing volunteering schemes, identify best practice, and explore the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of befriending in the care of patients with psychosis. The programme consists of different components including a literature review, case studies, interviews with volunteers and patients, an exploratory trial, and dissemination activities.


We are seeking to employ a Graduate Research Assistant, who will work on different components of the Programme and be particularly involved in the analysis of interviews and the implementation of the trial.


Candidates should hold an undergraduate degree (First or 2:1) in psychology or a related social science. Knowledge of mental health services and experience of mental health research is desirable.


This is a full-time fixed term appointment for 22 months . The post will be available from 1st December 2015 until 30th September 2017. 


Salary will be in the range of £29,317 – £30,905 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
