****DISABILITY: THE NEXT HOT TOPIC****

Right now, disability is arguably the hottest, fastest rising issue in international development and ADD is at the heart of this, cutting through to ensure that the voices of persons with disabilities grow ever louder. This rise is taking place from an incredibly low point – there are approximately 1 billion persons with disabilities in the world according to the World Health Organisation – and around 150 million with very high levels of need.

Shockingly small numbers of children with disabilities go to school leading to low literacy and low employment, and, for most persons with disabilities, even basic health services are inaccessible. Persons with disabilities are frequently discriminated against, stigmatised, and excluded from wider society – often by their own families.

Based in the UK we work out of 5 offices in developing countries in Africa and Asia with a staff team of approximately 100 people and a turnover of over £3m.

****YOUR ROLE: DIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES AT ADD****

The case for inclusion of persons with disabilities in development is now won – the challenge is how to do it. ADD International sits at the centre of this debate, uniquely positioned – no NGO is closer to the global movement of persons with disabilities, linking disability to mainstream development action.

This role is crucial: our programme strategic and thought leader, overseeing our country programmes, innovating and learning at the cutting edge of disability and development and achieving scale through partnership and influence with larger actors.

We need someone with excellent people management skills, the ability to think globally & strategically and translate this into action at country level. They are likely to have worked in the field of international development based in developing countries, and will understand the issues around working with marginalised groups, and the role of organised movements in bringing about positive change. They will be skilled at working within an organisation, linking to other functions such as funding, policy and influencing, and comfortable engaging with external partners, donors and governments. Above all else they must be passionate about ADD’s work, believe in taking a rights based approach to development and committed to the inclusion of persons with disabilities and women.
