United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Project Officer – Humanitarian Working Groups


As our organised, enthusiastic and determined Project Officer – Humanitarian Working Groups you’ll help develop systems and processes to enable effective, efficient deployment of technical support, global surge staff, funds and stocks into emergency responses.


Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Our Humanitarian department integrates emergency and development work, through our country programmes. It increases our capacity to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.


Save the Children’s operating model incorporates numerous working groups, allowing members to combine resources to drive forward strategic pieces of work. Two such groups are the Humanitarian Surge Working Group (HSWG) which ensures that people, funding and goods are organised and available to country offices, and the Humanitarian Technical Working Group, which co-ordinates tools, policies, capacity building and direct support to emergency responses.


Operating alongside the working group chairs, as our personable Project Officer Humanitarian Working Groups, you will ensure smooth communication, consistent workflow tracking, productive meetings, project delivery and a widespread understanding of the work of these groups. You will also:


  • Project manage work plans – recording actions, deadlines, responsibilities of members and monitoring progress.

  • Manage information – maintaining a comprehensive contacts sheet, a Dropbox, a chart documenting participation and leadership, and ensuring continued improvement of current tools.

  • Emergency Technical Advisor co-ordination – monitoring the emergency TA email account, updating the monitoring tool, arranging TA appointments and backstops.

  • Develop an external platform for working group materials and discussion, maintain technical sector pages, create informative briefs and documents about the groups.

  • Manage additional projects as they arise.

To be successful, you’ll be a flexible self-starter with plenty of initiative and a CV that reflects your strong organisational skills, proven ability to work under pressure producing quality products, and to manage a shifting workload. Assertive and analytical, you’ll able to work successfully with stakeholders across multiple levels and functions, and you will also have:


  • Experience of preparing reports, briefing papers or discussion documents.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including diplomacy and discretion when handling confidential and / or sensitive material.

  • The ability to source information and gather results from many internal and external stakeholders.

  • Impressive computer literacy, including confidence with Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

  • A commitment to, and interest in the aims of Save the Children.

Experience of working in the charity sector and of working on organisation-wide strategies is desirable.
