General Manager Sports Centre - Westway Trust - London

Reports to : Director of Sport

Contract Type : Permanent


Location: 1 Crowthorne Road


Hours : Full Time 40 Hours per week


Job purpose


Operating within a commercial and customer service led environment, you will be responsible for the effective delivery of business objectives within the Westway Trust’s Sports Centre. Your objectives will include maximising community impact, income generation opportunities, financial management, people management and leading on communication, operational systems and utilisation objectives.


Principal Accountabilities


You will be responsible for:
Guiding the overall provision of services, policies and programmes to ensure the Sports Centre achieves its targets and objectives for income and utilisation, in each of the key sports which are Football, Tennis and Climbing.


Development, implementation and compliance with the Sport Centre’s annual financial plans and budget, driving monthly budgeted income targets and ensuring that expenditure is controlled within budget.


Implementing, reviewing and reporting on the Sports Centre’s Annual Service plan and ensuring it is properly understood by the Sports Centre’s management team and employees.


Understanding industry trends, analysing data and identifying opportunities for business growth within the Sports Centre


Implementing, maintaining and managing an effective system of controls throughout the Sports Centre covering both financial and non-financial aspects of the business.


Developing a high performing team and motivating, line managing and developing staff, including regular 1:1s with line reports as appropriate.


Ensuring that appropriate standards of conduct are established and complied with at all times.


Providing clear leadership with regards to compliance with all health and safety procedures and requirements, fixing or escalating issues as appropriate.


Ensuring the Sports Centre fully complies with all relevant legislation and best practice.


Acting as the Health and Safety representative, responsible for health and safety, data protection and security for the Sports Centre. Preparing reports for and attending the quarterly Health and Safety Committee meeting on behalf of the Sports Centre.


Effective stakeholder management with key partners e.g. NGBs, Clubs, internal stakeholders, community groups. Encouraging community and priority user group participation.


Ensuring that high standards of customer service are implemented throughout the operational systems and support regular canvassing of customers’ views to inform change in the service and programme.


Working positively in accordance with the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy.


Achieving and maintaining Quest accreditation.


Achieving and maintaining Investors in People (IiP) accreditation.


Carrying out any other duties as may be reasonably required.


Person Specification


You will need to have the right blend and balance of commercial awareness, people management and business strategy, working for a charity supporting and enhancing the lives of people in the local community.


Educated to degree level or equivalent within a relevant field


Significant management skills and abilities in the leisure sector


Knowledge and skills in recruiting, developing and performance managing staff


Clear understanding of all aspects of financial planning


Knowledge of health and safety and employment legislation and best practice


Effectively manage and deliver projects on time and within budget
