The University of York is seeking to appoint an outstanding scientist to direct the York Neuroimaging Centre (YNiC) and to hold a chair in the Department of Psychology. This is an opportunity to lead a centre of excellence in one of the UK’s research-intensive universities.


YNiC houses two 3-T MR Scanners, a 248-channel MEG scanner, and facilities for MR‑guided TMS. YNiC employs staff to support research and teaching in neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience and to deliver commercial imaging services to health-care providers. Key Responsibilities


  • Sustain and enhance YNiC’s position as an internationally leading research centre

  • Establish a distinctive personal externally-funded research programme

  • Oversee the delivery of services to other researchers in human neuroimaging

  • Support and develop interdisciplinary links within and beyond the University

  • Support Psychology’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging

  • Develop the Centre in line with the University’s strategic goals

  • Contribute to ensuring the financial sustainability of the Centre

  • Internationally recognised expertise in human neuroscience and neuroimaging

  • A record of innovation and leadership in research

  • A record of attracting external funding for research

  • Influential publications

  • Proven management skills

  • Experience of collaboration across disciplinary boundaries

  • A commitment to teaching that enthuses and engages students

  • A commitment to the strategic development and financially sustainability of the Centre

Psychology at York is ranked in the top-10 psychology departments in the league tables compiled by the Guardian and the Times / Sunday Times newspapers and is among the top‑100 departments in the 2013, 2014, and 2015 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings. The University’s submission to the Psychology, Psychiatry & Neuroscience Unit of Assessment in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and was ranked 4th out of 82 in the UK. The salary will be on the professorial scale (current minimum £60,869 p.a.).
