Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position working on children’s acquisition of morphology and word order in Polish.
Based in the UK, you – a native or near native speaker of Polish – will regularly visit Poland in order to recruit and test children (aged 2-5 years) as part of a study investigating the acquisition of syntax and morphology.
You should have a first class or 2;1 honours degree or equivalent in psychology, cognitive science, linguistics or a related discipline and experience of working with 2-5 year old children, ideally in a research setting. An understanding of how word order and case marking operate in Polish is desirable.
This post offers the opportunity to join a thriving research group at the University of Manchester, and become a member of the new ESRC International Centre for Language and Communicative Development (LuCiD), a multi-million pound collaboration between the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster.
The aim of the project is to develop a better understanding of how children develop morphological productivity cross-linguistically. The post will involve constructing and carrying out experimental studies to test Polish children’s comprehension and production of morphology and word order to determine the effect of different kinds of language input on the process of developing productivity.
You will be based at the School of Psychological Sciences, University of Manchester working with Prof. Elena Lieven and Dr. Anna Theakston, but the project involves collaboration with researchers across the LuCiD Centre.
Please note that if you do not have permission to work in the UK, the University of Manchester will not be able to obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship for you to take up this position. All non EU/EEA candidates must have valid immigration status and/or a UK visa valid for the duration of the contract in order to be considered for this appointment.
