You will be a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join an ESRC funded research project, led by Dr Bo Yao (University of Manchester, UK) and Professor Sonja Kotz (University of Maastricht, Netherlands). We aim to use functional resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) to understand the neural mechanisms underlying covert emotional prosodic processing (“inner voices”) in silent reading of speech quotations. We will also explore the socio-emotional impacts of voice-hearing and the application of this neural modal in early language education and in clinical research on Parkinson’s disease and auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs).

You will actively engage in stimulus preparation, pilot testing, data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation and impact activities. You will hold a PhD in an appropriate field (e.g., neuroscience of language) or will have submitted your thesis before the start date. You will be experienced in conducting research using fMRI and/or EEG and have excellent writing skills (academic and non-academic). Additional experience in EEG source localisation, dynamic causal modelling (DCM), or in working with children or patients with Parkinson’s or AVHs will be beneficial.

By the measure of research power, University of Manchester was ranked 7th overall for Unit of Assessment (Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience) in REF2014. You will join a vibrant and stimulating research community at the School of Psychological Sciences. The School also has close links with the Institute of Brain, Behaviour and Mental Health, NIHR/Wellcome Trust Manchester Clinical Research Facility, ESRC International Centre for Language and Communicative Development (LuCiD) and Salford Royal Foundation Trust; it is a continual source of intellectual stimulation and career opportunities.

Please note that if you do not have permission to work in the UK, the University of Manchester will not be able to obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship for you to take up this position. All non EU/EEA candidates must have valid immigration status and/or a UK visa valid for the duration of the contract in order to be considered for this appointment.
