United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Advocacy Adviser – Deployable Conflict and Humanitarian Advocacy
We are seeking an experienced Advocacy Adviser to implement advocacy strategies on international conflict and humanitarian issues, including forced displacement.
Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Our Policy, Advocacy, and Campaigns Division is where we drive political agendas at national and global levels. We’ve integrated lobbying, policy, research and campaigning into one agile, powerful engine for change. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.
The Conflict and Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy Team works to influence national and international policies and practice that affect children in conflict and other humanitarian crises. As Advocacy Adviser you will shape our advocacy in response to conflicts, protracted displacement and other humanitarian crises. You will develop advocacy strategies, write briefings, coordinate lobbying, and where appropriate provide capacity-building support to country-based colleagues. In addition you will:
- Work closely and effectively with colleagues to ensure that our work is aligned internally and globally
- Represent Save the Children effectively to external contacts, including governments, policy specialists, corporates and NGOs
- Support the wider work of the Conflict and Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy team as required.
To be successful you will be a flexible self-starter, with proven expertise in humanitarian response and policy, including at the country level. You’ll have demonstrable understanding of issues relating to conflict, displacement and humanitarian policy. You will also:
- Possess an understanding of how NGOs can have influence, be strategic and have the ability to absorb, make sense of and communicate new information and ideas quickly
- Have experience of NGO advocacy, liaising with different types of stakeholders (e.g. UN, governments), with a good understanding of the external advocacy environment and ability to assess trends and developments likely to affect advocacy
- Have excellent communication skills, the ability to build effective working relationships with others in often challenging contexts and a highly flexible, proactive and “can do” approach
- Be willing to travel at very short notice, including to high-risk and/or uncomfortable locations, for extended periods and for up to 50% of the time.
At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.
At Save the Children our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. If you share our mission, are passionate about making it happen and strongly believe you can contribute then join us and we’ll give you every opportunity to succeed. We look forward to hearing from you.
Please note that interviews will take place at the beginning of September
