Database Developer




Database Developer £35,000 – £55,000 per annum


A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a SQL Server Database Developer to join reed.co.uk, the UK’s number one job site to help our database team in their efforts to help the world love Mondays.


The Role


The primary focus of this role will be to work in our database team. The team work as part of one of several cross-disciplinary teams, observing the Agile Scrum methodology and working closely with C# developers, Front-end (HTML/CSS) experts, Scrum Masters, Product Owners and, just occasionally, with Marketing.


Responsible for driving the development of the data layer on one of the UK’s largest websites the successful candidate will be reporting to a Database Lead and will focus on bridging the gap between a highly transactional database and Development of new functionality leveraging the latest web technologies.


On a daily basis you will be assisting with requirements definition and documentation, developing and building solutions, You will be working with SQL Server using features including replication, database clustering and will work in an environment which actively encourages the development of staff and the early adoption of new technology.


This role has the opportunity to take on responsibility and mentor junior developers. This position affords an excellent opportunity for the successful applicant to become involved with SQL in a complex and demanding web environment. You will be exposed to every aspect of the lifecycle of a large website with the focus on the development of and reporting from mission critical databases.


Technology


You will be working on a range of databases and stores such as Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon Redshift, Postgres and Redis, as well as prototyping and trialling on the newest technology like HDInsight (Hadoop on Microsoft Azure), Google BigQuery and Amazon’s Elastic MapReduce. You will also be working with third party databases such as Google Analytics, emailing service provider (ESP) databases and Salesforce.


We love new technology and have a history of early adoption. Back in 2005 were running SQL Server 2005 in production on the day of its official release; we are now running SQL Server 2012 and trialling SQL Server 2014. We are looking for someone who is equally passionate about technology and rarely leaves a tempting release candidate uninstalled.


We also don’t like to get too hung up of a particular stack so are looking for someone who is knowledgeable in a number of technologies but understands the need for consistency and standards across data.

Required Skills


  • Proficient in TSQL

  • Commercial experience of SQL Server, ideally experience providing data for a Commercial application and be highly motivated to develop these skills further.

  • Strong knowledge of Database Design

  • Previous exposure to an Agile environment (preferably Scrum)

  • Good understanding of Replication

  • Database performance tuning

  • Source Control (preferably Git)

Other desirable skills


  • Working knowledge of MS SQL Server and Tools (SSMS, SSIS, etc.)

  • Cloud infrastructures (both AWS and Azure)

  • Ability to dodge nerf bullets
