Research Associate/Senior Research Associate (Fixed Term)
The Department of Clinical Neurosciences, which is based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus was formed in 2004 and brings together the University Divisions of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Stem Cell Neurobiology, the John van Geest Centre for Brain Repair and the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre. The Department works alongside the existing Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust Clinical Division of Neurosciences. The emphasis of research is on basic and applied neuroscience with the specific aims of understanding mechanisms of injury and repair in common diseases of the central nervous system. The clinical emphasis is on demyelinating disease, neurodegeneration, behavioural neurology, stroke and brain injury using clinical, genetic, immunological and imaging approaches.
Applications are invited for a dynamic senior post doctoral research associate to join an internationally renowned stroke genetics research team investigating the genetic basis of cerebrovascular disease.
You will play a key role in establishing a functional genomics programme exploiting our finding from genome wide association studies (GWAS) and whole genome sequencing studies in ischaemic stroke.
This is an exciting and expanding area to work in with many new GWAS associations with polygenic stroke, and mutations associated with monogenic stroke, being recently identified by our group as part of the International Stroke Genetics Consortium.
You will have expertise in post-GWAS functional genomics and/or in iPSC culture and manipulation as a model system for disease, although this does not need to be in cerebrovascular disease. A particular focus of interest is developing model systems for cerebral small vessel disease. You will be expected to develop a programme of genomics research under the supervision of Prof Hugh Markus and Dr Stefano Pluchino and if working on iPSCs you will work closely with Dr Sanjay Sinha.
You will lead laboratory aspects of our stroke genetics programme, be responsible for supervising PhD students, research associates and clinical fellows working on projects in stroke genetics, and will be encouraged to take on your own PhD students. Some start-up funds will be provided to help establish the research programme.
The status of Senior Research Associate is awarded on the basis of individual merit and may be awarded to the successful candidate if approved by the Faculty Board of the Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
