United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Research Officer

Manchester City Centre, UK

Fixed Term Contract, initially 6 months

£23,016 – £26,040 per annum (plus contributory pension)

MAG saves lives and builds futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury for civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development. MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our work to ban landmines. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict.

We are currently seeking a Research Officer to undertake research and analysis projects. Reporting to our Director of Policy, and working closely with colleagues in MAG’s headquarters and programmes, you will deliver high quality written reports that will support MAG’s policy and influencing strategy.

The results of your work will directly support the development of MAG’s policy and influencing activity which focuses primarily on engagement with states, the United Nations system and multilateral fora. The post will focus primarily on issues relevant to MAG’s arms management and destruction work, covering small arms and light weapons and conventional munitions. Experience of research or analysis in disarmament, arms control or issues relevant to conflict and development is therefore essential. The post may also support MAG’s mine action work.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic self-starter with experience of successfully delivering policy, research or analysis projects relevant to MAG’s work. You will have a masters’ degree in international politics, development, conflict studies or similar relevant area. You will also have knowledge of current trends and issues relating to violence, conflict and development.

Excellent planning and organisational skills are essential, with the ability to prioritise a busy workload and deliver results to agreed timeframes. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a strong capacity for analysis and an ability to form close working relationships with colleagues in MAG’s headquarters and programmes overseas. You will need to be creative, professional and committed to MAG’s goals.

The post is for an initial period of six months and subject to the donor contract being signed. The post may be extended if additional funding is secured.
