NIHR Biomedical Research Centres Joint Preparatory Training Fellowship in Mental and Physical Health

Summary:

Applications are invited to apply for a Preparatory Research Training Fellowship post working at the mental / physical health interface, supported jointly by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centres at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts.  This post is available for up to 12-months full-time, but shorter-term and part-time posts are also options.  The post is suitable for clinicians undertaking specialist training (ST3-5) and non-medics, including allied health professionals (Band 6 – 7).

Preparatory Fellowships are designed to provide the time, resources and support to help bridge the gap between current training/employment and further professional and career development in research.  The Fellow will be expected to plan, prepare and submit an application to an external funding body to continue their research training (e.g. through a 3-year Clinician Training Fellowship), research grant or other Career Development award.

Details:

King’s Health Partners hosts two NIHR Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) and a NIHR Biomedical Research Unit in Dementia (BRU). Each BRC has a particular focus, with research themes based on physical health primarily at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and mental health/neurology at South London and Maudsley / Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London. There are existing research links between the two institutions and both BRCs have a strong commitment to training, with a dedicated training and research capacity building Cluster in each.

We wish to offer a comprehensive portfolio of collaborative and interdisciplinary projects that involve both the BRC at GSTT and the BRC/BRU at SLaM, combining supervisory expertise and resources from the two organisations. To facilitate this, there is now funding to support fellows dedicated to working on joint mental and physical health research projects for up to 12 months.

Both Biomedical Research Centres have successful experience of running 1 year ‘pump prime’ (Preparatory) funding schemes. Fellows can complete training courses, actively pursue their research project and are expected to prepare a research fellowship application for submission to an external funding body to support a PhD. Fellows are supported with research training, including development of skills to ready them for competing in a funding environment. The one year scheme has been successful in allowing us to support a new cohort each year, with all fellows actively pursuing funding and gaining further fellowships to continue their project. Importantly, the track record for acquiring external funding is very high.

This appointment will benefit from expert supervision and access to resources and infrastructure across the organisation.

Applicants must choose from a list of available projects and discuss the project with the supervisory team prior to submitting an application. Projects can be viewed at either of the BRC websites:  http://brc.slam.nhs.uk/training-and-education/current-opportunities;
